How to Write an Amazon Book Description That Converts
A repeatable structure for KDP book descriptions: the hook, the promise, the proof, the specification block and the close — plus the HTML formatting Amazon accepts.
Your description is the only place on the listing where you get to make an argument. Most authors waste it on a synopsis nobody asked for.
The structure below works for both fiction and non-fiction because it follows the order a shopper's questions actually arrive in.
The five-block structure
- 1Hook (1–2 lines): the tension or desire, in the reader's own language. This is what appears above the fold.
- 2Promise (2–3 lines): what the reader will have, feel or be able to do after finishing.
- 3Proof (3–5 bullets): concrete specifics — chapter outcomes, page counts, what is included.
- 4Specification block: format, trim size, page count, age range, paper type. Removes purchase risk.
- 5Close: one line of direct instruction — "Scroll up and start your first 12-week cycle today."
The first 200 characters carry the weight
Amazon truncates the description behind a "Read more" link on mobile, where most browsing happens. Assume the shopper reads only the first two lines and decides there. Lead with benefit and your primary keyword phrase, never with "In this book, the author explores…".
Formatting that Amazon accepts
KDP supports a limited HTML subset. Use it — an unformatted wall of text measurably underperforms a scannable one.
- <b> for a short heading line, used sparingly.
- <ul> and <li> for the proof bullets.
- <br> for controlled line breaks between blocks.
- Avoid tables, custom fonts, inline styles and emoji spam — they render inconsistently or get rejected.
Stay inside KDP's content rules
- No pricing, promotional or availability claims in the description.
- No links out to other stores or your own website.
- No unverifiable rankings such as "#1 bestseller" unless the claim is currently true and attributable.
- No reviewer quotes you did not receive.
